Technology

Kent State University uses the Blackboard Learn online class delivery system which works on either a PC or Macintosh.

Your computer should have the following minimum requirements:

Hardware

Whether you use a PC or a Mac, Kent State University has set up these minimum recommendations for your computer.

You should be aware that additional hardware or software may be required by instructors for specific courses.

Internet Access

Internet access and e-mail with an Internet Services Provider (ISP) must be acquired prior to registering for a class. Required browsers to use with Blackboard Vista 8.0:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer
  • Mozilla Firefox

Software

Operating System

Please use the most current operating system of your choice for your computer.

Applications

All courses will require you to write assignments, submit them electronically and view or download documents posted by instructors. Although it is strongly recommended to use Microsoft Office applications, there are other alternatives like Open Office.

Depending on the course being offered, you may need these types of applications:

  • Word Processing
  • Presentations
  • Spreadsheets
  • Database

You should be aware that additional hardware or software may be required by instructors for specific courses.

Virus Protection

Computer viruses can cause damage to your computer and the files stored in it. If you send a file with a virus to someone else in your class, that person's computer may become "infected" as well. Anti-virus software is available to help protect your computer.
