Radiology students do well at conference
KSU Ashtabula Of the 239 students taking the Phillip W. Ballinger Student Assessment Exam, it was one from Kent State University at Ashtabula who achieved the highest overall score. Spring 2012 Radiologic Technology graduate Lori Mayfield was recognized for her achievement at the Ohio Society of Radiologic Technologists Awards banquet held in Cleveland in April.

There are now 147 new graduates of Kent State University who took their classes on the Ashtabula Campus. Because of two dual majors, 149 degrees were awarded at commencement ceremonies May 4, 2012.

Retired Teachers endow scholarship
The Ashtabula County Retired Teachers' Association (ACRTA) recently endowed a scholarship at Kent State University at Ashtabula to help students in pursuit of higher education. This scholarship will be awarded to a returning student in at least the third semester on the Ashtabula Campus pursuing a bachelor's degree in education and is slated for award in June 2013.

Kent State Ashtabula Physical Therapist Assistant Technology Program Readies for Market Demand
Kent State University at Ashtabula’s Physical Therapist Assistant Technology Program is the only one of its kind in the country to offer a transitional concentration for certified athletic trainers. This new concentration has doubled enrollment to the program, which now graduates about 55 students each year.

PA residents can save up to $6,000 on tuition
The tuition decrease reflects an 80 percent reduction in the surcharge normally assessed to out-of-state students. For example, a full-time out-of-state students taking upper-division classes in the fall of 2011 pay $14,156 a year. Residents in a PA or WV county adjacent to Ohio will pay just $7,788.

No bones about it; real is better
Biological Science Instructor Michael Brennan said there is a difference between learning with real bones and the plastic models most students are used to. "Even though plastic models are molded from real bones, there is certain detail that is lost in the plastic mold," Brennan said. "The lack of bumps and grooves affects identification," he said. "Most plastic bones do not include foramen, which are little holes for blood vessels and nerves, because they are not drilled all the way through the plastic."

Joseph Puthoff named the 2011 Distinguished Former Student
Joe Puthoff knew early in his life that he wanted a career in television. While attending St. Edward’s High School in Lakewood, Ohio, he worked part time for his uncle at Storycraft, Inc. Storycraft was a leader in writing, producing and recording video and audio presentations for major corporations such as Westinghouse and Ohio Bell. This early experience in corporate communications led him to pursue a bachelor of science in telecommunications from Kent State University.

Ashtabula Campus Goes to the State House for Kent State Day
Highlighting the Excellence in Action that occurs every day on its eight campuses, the university hosted Kent State Day at the Ohio Statehouse on March 16. A delegation of about 130 people, including Kent State President Lester A. Lefton, university trustees, students, alumni, faculty, campus and college deans, and community partners, traveled to Columbus for the all-day event. Dean Stocker, Kelly Anthony, Carol Drennen, John Yesso and other employees and students represented the Ashtabula campus.

Kent State University at Ashtabula is partnering with Lake Health and Lakeland Community College to expand educational opportunities for nurses in Northeast Ohio. The new arrangement allows registered nurses with an associate degree to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing (B.S.N.) degree from Kent State by attending classes at Lake Health’s TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township, Ohio.

Cadaver lab reflects commitment to students
The Robert S. Morrison Health and Science Building on the Ashtabula Campus features plenty of unique learning spaces for students in nursing and other health care profession degree programs. It also houses the only cadaver lab between Erie and Cleveland. This lab is the only one of its kind within the Kent State University system.

Ashtabula Campus PT Assistant Program Largest in State
The Kent State University at Ashtabula Physical Therapist Assistant Technology program (PTST) is now the largest in Ohio, with 45 graduates of the program in 2010. This makes it the largest of the 17 similar programs in the state.

Ashtabula Campus student returns from NASA
A Kent State University at Ashtabula student recently returned from Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama after helping NASA design a Martian rover. Associate of mechanical engineering major Matthew Krotzer was part of a team of college students that designed, built and tested a rover for a simulated NASA contract over a three-day period.

Roger Craik's full-length book manuscript "Crumpled Mosaic" was a finalist in the 2010 Richard Snyder Publication Prize. The manuscript was one of 20 chosen from a field of 374.

A very specialized piece of equipment used by Respiratory Therapists has been donated to Kent State University at Ashtabula. Students in the Respiratory Therapy Technology program will now have the opportunity to learn and work with The Vest ™ airway clearance system before applying it on patients in the clinical setting.

A new resource section has been added to the Campus web site to list rental properties. Students and staff can now see a full list of rentals and landlords can easily post rental openings.

100% of May 2010 grads become Radiologic Technologists
All May 2010 Kent State University at Ashtabula Radiologic Technology graduates have passed the registry exam on the first attempt. The 13 class members are now registered Radiologic Technologists and have earned the title R.T. for use after their name.

December 2009 graduates of the Kent State University at Ashtabula health care programs in nursing and occupational therapy assistant technology (OCAT) all passed licensing and certification examinations on the first attempt.

Students earn college degree before graduating high school
Earning enough credits to earn a college degree before even graduating from high school is a very attainable goal. The most recent graduating class of Kent State University at Ashtabula included two Jefferson High School students who reached that goal.

Smith & Wesson CEO visits Kent State at Ashtabula students
Smith & Wesson President and Chief Executive Officer Michael F. Golden spent about five hours working one-on-one with student teams in simulated, competitive, corporate decisions. In addition, he made a presentation that would be a typical format for a publicly-traded company to present to investors and stockholders.

GM and CEO of Conneaut Telephone honored by KSU
The Distinguished College of Technology Alumni Award bestows recognition upon graduates who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in their professional lives and careers. The recipients were selected by a committee of current and former independent College of Technology faculty and administrators, as well as several past recipients. The number of honorees – 21 – emphasizes the importance of technology in the 21st century.

Collaborative project launches web site
The collaboration among a Kent State University at Ashtabula professor, student and staff member could lead to the campus being considered an international research center in the application of complexity science to the study of health and health care. The Center for Complexity Science in Health has just launched its web site.

Tuition reduced for residents in bordering PA counties
Kent State University is reducing tuition by more than $6,000 annually for residents of western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia when they attend a KSU regional campus. The price break will start this fall.
