Professor Develops Interactive Educational Product

Posted Dec. 20, 2010

Dr. Leslie switched gears from her usual teaching assignments this Fall to develop an exciting new educational tool for McGraw-Hill's General Chemistry textbook by Martin Silberberg and other McGraw-Hill texts.  Dr. Leslie acted as the coordinator for content development for the Silberberg text and was involved in authoring as well as checking for consistency and quality across the project.  The product, called Learn Smart, is designed as an interactive learning tool that facilitates student learning and understanding of material.  It is not just another online homework system, but instead aims to provide a customized learning plan for each student.  Once concepts and skills have been mastered and reinforced using Learn Smart, students will be more successful in applying their knowledge to homework and formal class assignments.  The Learn Smart system offers extremely powerful feedback to students about their strengths and weaknesses and also allows the instructor to provide timely remediation and intervention based on student progress and feedback.  Learn Smart will go into beta-testing in the Spring of 2011.  The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is proud of its involvement in this innovative approach to learning.
